Editing Week 1
During the first week of editing, Sasha, Christlie, and I sought a little help as far as what to do.
We had an idea of what we wanted in our film, but applying it in an effective and communicative manner we need assistance. We wanted the opening of our film to begin with the voice over of a news cast playing in the background as we introduce the opening scenes characters. Considering the opening mostly partakes during the same time, we wanted mostly direct cuts as transitions to further emphasize skips in time later.
One spot in which we chose to use different transitions includes the transition from when the girls first get their drinks to after they finish them. We wanted to use a dissolve for this spot, as it signifies a jump in the timeline and insists the night dragged on given their mental state.
We also wanted to include a fade after I "help the girls to their car," as following this, the movie skips to the next day. A fade to black not only symbolizes the the fall of night, and rise of day thereafter, but also signifies a closing on the opening scene, which is unbeknownst to the audience, the last time the two girls will be seen prior to their disappearance.
To help us with this, our classmate Carson, as well as friend David, assisted us in the editing process, showing us how to adjust lighting, set camera focus, and enter non-diegetic sound such as the voiceover, as well as music.
We did, however, run into some problems. Some of our clips were too short to smoothly cut without feeling harsh and rushed. This did throw in some delay in finishing, as we had to re-record many of our shots to fit our edits. This had to wait until Sunday as well, resulting in the first editing session taking over a week to complete.
